Hi Guys,

I am new to the metal detecting world, and I am loving it. I have been lurking here for a few months while learning the ropes, and you have been so very helpful. Well, Santa finally granted me my wish, and I had my first hunt outside of my backyard over the holidays. I found my first silver ring, and this odd rifle cartridge. I have never seen one with 2 shoulders, and a search on Google didn't bring up much. Does anyone have any thoughts? Or suggestions on where I might find more info?

Thanks so much.

HH,
Kevin

Actually looks like a blank round from an army M-1 rifle which would be about like a 30.06

Cool. Thanks, Normsel. The location I was at and the depth would indicate that it was pre-1980 and definitely post-civil war. In addition, there may have been some training activity going on for the military, but I am not sure. The location today doesn't seen to indicate that hunting with a live round would have been likely as it was lakeside. So, your analysis makes sense. I just can't make much out at the base of the cartridge.

I used M-1 rounds like that back in 1963 before the M-14 or the M-15 or M-16

We were the last to use the old M-1 rifle and it sure looks like an old M-1 blank cartridge
