If you haven't visited the General discussion board check there for a dozen or so other posts asking this same question. Lots of responders and lots of information there. Also check the brands forums for any detectors you are interested in.

As G.A.P. Metal said check out the brands forum. Read field tests that describe the operation. You can't go wrong with starting with a Tesoro.

That's kinda like asking what's the best vehicle to buy. It will depend on what you want to use it for, what you can afford, and the performance you demand.

I agree with the other guys, depending on what your looking for will depend on the detector you want to get. I just bought an MXT great machine has alot of great things but I'm just starting to to learn how to use it. Check eBay lots of them for sale a pretty good prices. Good luck

Loved my Ace 250. Had it for 2 years, found lots of coins, jewelry, etc. Upgraded to the AT-Pro - Bought with the finds form the 250. If you like the idea of the graphics it is a great starter.

It wouldn't be a good choice for wet ocean sand or highly mineralized ground.
