What makes you think metal detecting is off limits anywhere? You don't ask if you can play ball or Frisbee. If you ask an official they will most likely state some policy that digging is not permitted. Don't ever ask............

look online your rules are there. just fill in your holes. there are normally rules posted at parks if doesn't say anything then you can hunt. if you are hunting private party ask permission. respect the law out you will get in big trouble and they can take your detector.
