Has it and if so, how long did it take? Was it one big find, or a number of small ones?

Mine has and it took about six months. I had one find that paid about half and then several small ones that put me over the top.

I am sure many new to this hobby will be curious.

there's a saying....trust in God; all others bring Data. I can say my cost in gas, batteries, material, etc. far outweighs what I've pulled in to-date. So the myth this hobby pays for itself is misleading and not fully supported. But for me it doesn't matter.....I'm in it for all the fun and therapy it brings to me, and wouldn't trade it otherwise.

Don't think of detectors as having to pay for themselves. Do cars, deer rifles, wives pay for themselves?

When I bought my "Gold Mountain" back in middle 80's, I paid $125.00 for it. I was living in Ponca City Ok. at the time, went out into my back yard and in a small hole 4" down, I found 8 Indian head pennies under a huge root. Then I went into the front and found a 50 Franklin, 1916 dime, a"44" Walking half, and four Barbers, sold the the Barbers (Quarters), I don't remember the exact dates, cause I was so excited, for 150.00! Sent the dime to my dad if Fresno,ca. and someone that I knew at the time helped them -selfs to the rest of my stash. However, I went out the next day and bought another Gold Mountain.

I have found a ton of clad and 5 silver coins in about 3 weeks with my V3i. But that's a far cry from the money I dropped on it the extra coil and the pro pointer. But like most said, it's my hobby and I don't do it for the $

I have a GArrett Ace 250, and NO to your question.... The Ace has been sitting idle for a few years (divorce) so it hasn't been the best of situations. But I can say, my son wanted his own and before I dropped $500+ on a decent MD, I just went to Gander mountain (locally) and bought him some off brand for $169. I must say, it seems to work really well and he learned it really quick. So my son has $168.96 to go :hello2: and then he can upgrade..... haha..

My Tesoro Compadre paid for itself after 15 or 20 minutes of detecting with this 11.4 gram 14k ring with garnet. More than doubled my $160 DSC03687.JPG investment.
