Those are shotgun shell bases. From about 1900-1960 when they started making plastic hulls.
The paper rotted away, leaving the brass base.

Some people colllect those.

Yep, you're right.
For the past three years I've been sending all the shotgun shell brass that I find to "Turtlefoot13" (a TNet member).
He's putting together a shotgun shell database in his spare time.

Anytime my detector passes over one of these, they sound like a nickel. . . about 20% of the time they're either a V-Nickel of a Buff
so that's why I end up digging them. . . LOL.

yeah, I hate that.
I have like 300 of those things.

I don't mind them, they're kind of cool.
I'd rather dig these than clad.

I will try and find some more of these... Got a field left to detect...

Anytime I start finding shotgun shell brass heads, I know folks have been there. . . and maybe lost a few coins
as they pulled another shell from their pocket to reload (at least that's what I hope for).

I found a 1917 wheat penny in the same location. So your right about that....
