I have had the same issue and until. I see your in Southern IL. I'm in Northern IN. Same region and it's hard to strike out on a mid west hunt then come home and see all the find for the day from all over the country. This is my proposal for that particular problem. I have recently spent sometime researching my area. Even went so far as to talk to some region members here to maybe do a hunt together. New faces and hopefully new places to hunt. I picked up two places just today within 15 min drive time of each other. If you can line up two or more sites, if one don't pan out you have the hope of the other. Just my 2 cents. I see you swing an AT Pro. Have you looked into local fresh water beach sites or creeks at crossings or bridges? Make your self a DIY scoop n give it a shot many of these places are public. HH

Lol, I was going to post something about this but didnt know what to call it. I'm frustrated. I've put in probably 70 hours with this thing since I got it.... The oldest coin I've found was 1947. And all I seem to find is tractor parts and tools... Only 2 things have I found that were very interesting. The soil here in my corner of PA is heavy red clay and it seems to eat metal. I'm thinking of taking a break

You and I both, I have lived in my town all my life. I know practically everyone. I have town maps dating back to the mid 1800's and I just now started having the _ _ lls to ask. All they can say is no, but I hear what your saying. The first two cold calls to people I haven't spoke with in years yielded two new spots. A old abandoned farm house and out buildings. The second was an old go cart track back in the sixties out in the middle of a field that was recently removed and turned back into agricultural. My dad used to race carts there when I was just a kid. All I remember were lots of people betting on the races with a liberal amount of alcohol involved. Some one had to lose something. Do some research have your talk all figured out and if they say no, Thank them and go onto the next one. They can't eat you LOL

research helps me alot, cause I love history anyways. Plus I like to go places that offer some
privacy, then I can relax, drink a beer, and just enjoy the afternoon.
I'm lucky cause my girl friend also enjoys this great hobby.

I'm just afraid it's going to create an extremely awkward moment if they say no, and I don't like awkward moments. They're just too....awkward :)

The worst thing that can happen...is that someone would say no. Engage them in a conversation first, SMILE and tell them what a cool house they have and do they know the history of it, ask what year it was built, how long have you lived there etc. Then lead up to asking permission. Explain how careful you will be with your digging. I don't knock on doors, I usually drive by and if I see them in the yard I may stop and start up a conversation. It's that easy and can lead to some awesome finds. If they say no, tell them thanks anyway and move on.

What do you guys do when you have had a few bad days detecting? Everything has been slow. Done some research found some places but came up with nothing. I have a hard time staying strong when it gets like this.

Been plenty frustrated myself at times. Not that I've found anything as amazing as some of the vets here, but when i hit a dry spell, i usually take a few days/weeks off. In that time I just do more research, which is relaxing to me and includes internet searches, library etc. When i find a good tip, i'm excited all over again to go try my luck.

I have trouble asking people to hunt their properties and have social anxiety as well. I find that drinking a couple beers or taking a couple xanax 20 minutes before I ask someone really helps. Just don't do both at same time. Lol

I have had my eye on a lot of nice late 1800s houses. I guess I need to just bite the bullet and knock on the door. No one is ever outside this time of year.

You should find out which bank owns it. Call the bank manager and ask him or her if you can hunt it. If you go to the records office at the local court house and ask to see the plat maps of the area, you can find out who owns it. Personally I might just stalk the place until I figured out who the grounds keeper was and then just ask him.

A few bad days? Seriously, It may take weeks or months of hunts before I get something other than clad, and I expect that is true of most hunters. Everyone hits a hot spot now and then, but has long dry spells as well. Anyone getting into the hobby expecting to dig silver or find valuable relics on most hunts is going to be disappointed.

Oh, come on now. I bet if you just went up, knocked on the door with a big smile and told them your hobby is metal detecting and you like digging up interesting items in your spare time they would gladly let you detect their yard! I can almost guarantee it.
