Funny observation about metal detecting

I went to an antique flea market yesterday. And bought an antique single tree in nearly perfect condition for $12. And there were plenty to choose from. But when I found just the rusted partially broke middle bracket of one in my yard... I carefully cleaned it , like it was the Holy Grail. I was kinda bummed to see the whole tree was like a dime a dozen. But still my rusted and busted bracket was my find! However next time I may not spend hours detailing tbe next one.

What is a single tree? If it is obvious please don't laugh to hard. LOL!

It's funny, cause' sometimes when I get home from hunting, I'll clean my few modest finds of usually a few rusty square nails and a horse shoe or two, lay them on the counter, then periodically stare at them the remainder of the day as if they were made of gold or something. :icon_scratch:

I have found three horseshoes... on a strip of OLD highway that runs across Judy's property. The road hasn't seen horse traffic in... maybe.... 150 years. Others would pass up these shoes as trash, but they are my TREASURE! TTC

Guess I'm a different animal. I keep some smaller iron artifacts for testing, but if it isn't significant like part of an old gun, it goes in the trash.
I do keep many non-ferrous relics but only the unbroken objects.

I'm an old farm boy, so I can tell you what a single tree is. First the horse has to have special harness (usually made of leather) put on him by the farmer. I mean the farmer puts harness on the horse, so he can pull different things like a harrow, wagon, basically small horse drawn farm implements. The harness normally has a set of trace chains, one on each side of the horse at his rearend, and those chains are hooked to the single tree. He stands between the chains and the single tree is behind him and attached to the implement. When you work two horses beside each other each horse has his own single tree and both of them are attached to a double tree. The back side of the double tree is then attached to a load. Then they can pull the load as a team of horses. Sorry, but the best way I know to explain.

Truffle seeking pig modified for metal.

The results have been so-so

When the pig fails me (which is often), I am relegated to a CTX3030 *sigh*. Like the dark ages or something.

You have to remember that, up until just a few decades ago, they were still being used and built.

We have barns that hold several dozen of them, just rotting away.

Sadly, that is the future for almost all of that stuff, rotting away.

Thanks for the education on the single tree I was quite in the dark on that as I have not spent much time on a farm. But I am always glad to learn something new.
