Where do you like to detect , and any suggestions?

When I detect , I like privacy... I don't like to be questioned or gawked at. So I choose more remote locations... Which seem to offer less finds. I live around alot of state forests and historical properties... So no detecting there. I detect in a 250 acre woodland preserve behind me.... But so far not much to find. I'm wearing out my welcome digging up my parents and my sisters old homes... Lol.... I have my abandoned grandparents' land... But all I seem to find is my grandpop's beer tabs, my grandmom's cat food cans and alot of coal... Any suggestions?

The black hole between Montana and Colorado.
Detector(s) used
Truffle seeking pig modified for metal.

The results have been so-so

When the pig fails me (which is often), I am relegated to a CTX3030 *sigh*. Like the dark ages or something.

I try to find places where people HAVE congregated, but no longer do.

Old towns
Old mining camps
Trapping routs
Fairgrounds
Reservoir beaches when it it cold and icy

Places like that.

I grew up an only child on a remote Wyoming ranch. I despise being around people. It is easy to get away from people here, but I don't know about PA. Having traveled to Hanover area (where my in laws live) it seems like it would be hard to get your own space.

In the spring I hunt old wooded picnic areas or any place where people may have stopped for a quick rest. And schoolyards, parks and playgrounds. If you go early or late, they are usually fairly empty. In the summer I am a water hunter, up to my chin (I am really short) in whatever lake I am hunting. Lots of people, lots of detector competition, not too many finds, but I love it. In the fall I love shorelines, the water is usually at its lowest level, and areas covered with foliage are now bare.

Stick with old maps a while. Expanding out from where you are at for larger tracts with now gone homes compared to past.
Follow r.r. tracks (on maps) to find whistle stops from past that are gone today and fit your preference for seclusion. Rivers too.

Those places sound heavenly. Luckily I'm not in town and PA has numerous and plentiful farms, old houses. Collapsed farm houses. Beautiful wooded mountains and valleys .... But again it's always owned by somebody right? :( old towns... Deserted would be a dream

Maybe out there, I just don't know.

Fortunately, we are the least populated state in the U.S., yet one of the largest in terms of landmass. Lots and LOTS of public land.

Your other option may be to travel a bit. You aren't but a few hour drive from WV and Ohio. In the Rocky mtn region, it is not uncommon to drive many hundreds of miles for the most mundane things. Heck, my wife and I have driven 5 hours one way for dinner (not a lot of options where we are). Look for places that are a 5 or 6 hour drive away. Once you do that, your circle of searchable land become much much larger, almost 200K square miles.

private land is the best. If your neighbors agree and the land has history. My house was built it the 50's and I'm finding silver dimes. If not then the oldest parks, or old schools that have been torn down locations. I'm working on a area that had a school ,just trying to fine tune it's location. gd lk hh

my long term detecting plan after I retire is to buy a nice sized sailing boat. Roam the Carribean, stop on uninhabited islands and search the entire island in the nude.
So far, I have enough money for sunscreen.

Well i hunt fields and woods too. I hate asking for permission to hunt someone's manicured yard. Course.holly you shouldn't have a problem getting permission. Whenever i am worried about getting denied i just send my wife to get permission;-) a old guy generally won't turn down a young woman

I like old abandoned houses and farms. I too do not like knocking on doors. I just wait for the chance to talk to people during my job, then I pop the question.
Parks are great for clad coins and jewelry. I usually hunt those areas off season or early in the day when few people are around.
A little hint if your from Pa. Search your local history, find the area where new troops gathered for training prior to the civil war. Usually old fair grounds or private land donated by a sucessfull person in the town. You might be surprised what you find there! Good luck.

May I suggest using the sunscreen money on a banana hammock at least?

Holly, here's he best advise you'll ever get :laughing7:

Once you've exhausted all of the easy access hunting areas, it's time to pack up and move to another state :tongue3:
