Cleaning and Preserving Coins and Buttons?

I know it's not favorable to clean old coins. My question is what can you do to clean non silver coins and metal flat buttons without removing the patina? What if any is the best thing to do to preserve any old metals after cleaning?

I just use water and dawn soap.....if its really bad I'll soak it and brush with a soft brush....I used my wife's makeup brush
(shhh...don't tell her) it seems to work well for me. Also I have heard to soak in vinegar, not sure about that one but I guess try it on a reg coin.
