Depends on the type of soil, amount of rain, etc.. Usually in the top 2-6 inches.

As badmonkey mentioned, there are many variables that determine coin depth. If this park has been hunted before (very likely) you'll be hard pressed to find good coins at less than 4". Just about any machine will find those. Deeper targets can sometimes hide. The better detectors do a better job at finding them. About the only way you're going to know where the good stuff is, is to find one and see.
