Greetings fellow Montanans, Silver Bow County has a rich history in mining. At the base of Red Mountain, which is about 12 miles from Butte, is the ghost town of Highland City. The gold boom there lasted seven years, but within a year after the stream of gold ended, Highland City was completely deserted. Most of the town's 600 log buildings have decayed with only a few of them still standing. Other ghost towns or near ghost towns in the area are, Burlington, Norwood, Silver Bow Junction, and Valley.

Awesome info. I knew about highlands and took a trip out there not long ago just to look around but a snow storm moved in so headed out pretty quick. I did find one old cabin and plan on going back this summer.

Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, also has a lot of history. ''The town of Southern Cross, high on the shoulder of Iron Mountain, can still be found on some maps.'' ''Burnt Hill, at the edge of Anaconda, is the legendary site of a battle between two Indian tribes.'' Ghost towns; Barcon, Greyson Springs, Isabel, , Levengood's, McClellan Gulch, Stone Station, Stuart, Sunset, Wahington Gulch, Yam Hill, and Yreka.

Hope these help.

I couldn't believe it either. Nothing new since I started MDing a month or so ago and then 5 old coins in one day. It was a place a guy told me to try who has been detecting since the 70s. Well I figure he tells me about this spot because he has probably already detected it years ago and there is nothing left. WRONG. Well I have finally come back to earth and reality.

WOW!!!!! good job on a 1918 wheatie. Congratulations.

It always pays to keep going back to a productive area and redetect. Go slow and listen to any faint tones, and it is the best to detect when there is moisture in the ground (detect after a good rain). Good Luck!

Well the ground is wet today. 8+ inches of heavy wet snow today. Good thing I went MDing yesterday as there will be no detecting today and whatever treasure is in the ground will stay in the ground. Gotta love the weather in Montana. Better love it because you can't change it. :dontknow:

Give it time, at this time of the year the snow will not last for long. We are getting much needed rain.

Wow pretty awesome congrats again. I've been coin detecting since Feb and still haven't found one piece of silver. I'm headed back out to the schoolyard since the snow is almost gone the ground is nice and wet.

There a place up German Gulch called " Circus Flats " where I was told and if I remember right they often brought in a circus for the many gold miners and their families who lived in German Gulch at the time. I know the spot but it is huge and would like to check it out sometime. There is plenty of area for more than a dozen MDers.
Maybe " old digger " has some insight on this area ?
The info I got on this site was from geocaching.com site called " Circus Flats " that we hunted when we were really big into geocaching which we still do once in a great while.
Too many other outdoor activities to do them all in our short summers where riding out atv take up most of it.
