I am interested in getting into metal detecting as a hobby. There is an old large slaughter house compound near me that has been shut down for about fifty years. It has numerous old buildings sitting on about 20 acres. I know it was operational from about the 1880's to 1960's. Any seasoned detectors have any opinions on if it would be worth searching? Also what decently priced brand/model detector should a newbie purchase? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also know of a secluded area near me with old homes from the early 1900's that have been abandoned for a good 50 years that I think would be good hunting.

Sounds like some very interesting locations to work....GET PERMISSION before you do anything!!!... I own two machines both white's both bought used at a discount...both work great and have found a lot of stuff...if your not sure buy a good used machine from someone on this site. If you have personal info on a local place to hunt? More than likely nobody's hunted it... what are you waiting for?... I'm tellin' you it's addicting.

We never turn down an opportunity to detect a new location. Else much sleep will be lost wondering what we might have passed up.
