Whenever I get a new detector I always head to a sand or woodchip play lot. There are usually some coins to be found, you don't need to worry about how good you are pinpointing as long as you recover your holes, digging is easy and there is generally less junk than in the average yard.

Lol, yes, and I DO promise not to cloud the message boards with pull tabs and bottle caps! It was more tongue in cheek of course. Good idea SusanMN I think I'll shoot over to the park on Sunday morning and check the play ground area. I'm really getting a kick out of it. Also found an electrical housing box buried in the yard. Don't how that ever got out there but hey, it's true, you really have know Idea what your going to find. HH all!

As long as there weren't "live" wires in the electrical box! Lol! That could prove painful! Welcome to the hobby, " you can check out any time you want, but you can never leave". Say the song lyrics , yep your hooked!

Of course it's my first and only MD so I can't compare to others, but I was shocked how lite it is, I have some spine and shoulder problems and was worried it would bother one or both of them but the damn thing can't weigh but a pound and a half? It's like swinging your arm freely so that made me happy. I'm still trying to figure out the machine but I'm loving it. I'm not sure my volume button is working because it's VERY loud at 10 but even at 1 it's extremely loud so I'm not it's working. With headphone I'm able to turn the headphone speaker down so in that sense it's ok with me. Like I say it's light as a feather which I imagine they all are, the auto ground balancing/grab is awesome. I didn't even know what it was until I goggled metal detector always beeping lol after I read my manual and learned to hit auto balancing and from then on it's been GREAT! Cause it was driving me crazy with constant beeping. I'm still learning and I have SO much to learn but it's really an awesome hobby. HH

You've got that right Msbeepbeep! I was telling my friends at work, it's like waking up in your casino hotel room as you take the elevator down to the machines that feeling of "what if I pick that right machine today" I get that feeling EVERYTIME I grab my MD lol of course I'd rather spend my money on this hobby then give it to a slot machine so it's a win win! SusanMN nailed it Bill. Wood chip or sand tot lots are a great way to learn your new machine! Always some coins and a variety of trash, learn your machines tones to a variety of targets. No difficult digging. Good Luck!

Don't underestimate the loot of ones own yard...location and road age can mean a lot. Look to your local history and I'm sure you'll find some old areas near you. Just a question if its been gobbled up with the other 70% the feds took.

I tend to believe residential yards are better to learn in than the park. The amount of trash signals in most parks can be overwhelming. I recommend for a beginner to cherry pick a residential yard starting out then gradually open up your discrimination. Just my opinion.
