I've never been on a hunt where I'd need one. If out for a long weekend and camping, a car charger would seem in order or a good supply of fresh alkalines. In my own case, I'd be happy if battery life were a serious concern because that'd mean I'd had the time to do a LOT of detecting.

I'll tell you that solar chargers are getting cheaper all the time,try REI or a Cabelas for good ones, or even Realgoods.com

All of my detectors get about 30 hours on a set of batteries, so with a set of spares in the car, I'm fine.

I always have a spare set of rechargeables on hand too. Don't see a need for solar unless you were doing some primitive camping for a week or so.

I would think even a decent solar charger would need a whole day of solid sunlight to charge, so bring an extra set of batts.
