Why haven't I found one yet?

We all have one. That metal detecting monkey on our back. That elusive "first _______." Whether you're a veteran detectorist or a hobbyist just starting out, we all share the same problem; there is something we just can't put our coil over. I'm referring to that otherwise common find that for some twist of fate and circumstance has eluded you. Common is of course relative to the type of detecting one does. A beach hunter expects to find gold rings, not everyday perhaps, but eventually. However, many have spent countless hours without yellow in the scoop.

For me, for the longest time, my detecting monkey was finding that first silver coin, a 1943 P War Nickle. Then, it became finding that first 1800's coin, then that first large cent. Once I started hunting colonial sites it became that first Seated coin. Heck, I found 10 Spanish silvers before finding my first Seated coin last year. Our goals adapt as our detecting habits evolve. With the Seated monkey off my back, the Shield Nickel monkey can take center stage.

What is your current metal detecting monkey? What common (for your type of detecting) find is still waiting for you put your coil over for the first time?

I'm waiting for my first old silver coin. I've only found a Kennedy half and while it was pretty and made my heart stop because of the size of it,there's nothing like a silver coin. A CW belt buckle wouldn't be bad either.:laughing7:

A Spanish Cob.

Terry, I completely understand. I'm detecting fields that saw heavy trade during the mid 1600's-1850. I've dug 10 Milled Spanish, 2 Massachusetts Silvers, close to 10 late 1600's William III coppers, and a pre 1649 hammered Charles I silver penny. But for the life of me I can't find a cob!

This will be my eighth summer detecting. I have had great, amazing luck with rings, a bunch of silver dimes and last year one off my wish list, a beautiful sterling thimble. But I am still waiting for a big silver coin. Doesn't need to be a dollar, or even a half. I just want to find a darn silver quarter! As always, hoping this will be the year.

One of them 1652 shillings! GOD Bless Chris

Chris, I have a feeling this is your year! You've pulled some great finds from those fields, and we know there's Tree Coins there! If it's not Mass silver you dig, I bet you'll still find a hammered this year!

I'm never sure what will turn up next. I don't have the pleasure of living in an area where there is a lot of colonial stuff. I have been lucky enough to cross a Silver Dollar off my list, several Walker Halves, a Barber Half, and late last year I got my first Seated. So far this year only Silver Dimes...so I'll be happy to find anything bigger than a dime!

I haven't had the luck to find a silver dollar yet. Halves turn up in the fields pretty often, but no silver dollars. I did manage a 1874 Gold dollar last year, certainly unexpected. Good luck this year

Like most, a gold coin is high on the list but it's not really one you expect to find. I would have thought I would have found a 2 cent, 3 cent, or half dime by now. The only 2oth century coins I haven't found yet is a Peace dollar and a Barber half but big silver is hard to find these days and also unexpected.
