Public Lands in Oregon?

I have tried online to find info on the vast public lands of Oregon, but have
come up empty. Specifically, the areas of Central Oregon around Prineville,
Madras, and Bend - the old grazing lands that cover much of that part of
the state. I have hiked there since I was a kid, but is metal detecting
allowed? Not Indian sites of course, just areas in the boonies that look
interesting....

Any Oregonians able to help? Thanks!

I'm from Eugene. Most of that area is probably BLM, so check with them. They allow most things, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks Wayne - yes, it's posted as BLM land on ancient signs. And yeah, I figure
you can do just about anything out there - there's never a soul for miles, and it's
obvious people hunt and hike and camp and all that...

What I'm planning to hunt is an area where there are old stacks of rocks - piled
long ago by who knows who. Possibly to mark a good hunting spot, but maybe
something else. Either way, there's lots of trails and places where people have
been so should be interesting.

My only problem is I'm in the Seattle area, so it's a long drive! But I travel
for a living around the NW, so plan to spend a few days this summer.

Thanks again,

Hey Zommbee! I think you will be safe in your Oregon adventure. You do have to check if you want to hunt in any State Parks, most will allow it & will even give you a free permit, but a few are Historical Sites & will not allow detecting. BLM should be fine. I am working ontaking the time to get out on several hunts on portions of the Oregon Trail on private property. Should be interesting. Good luck. Spotz
