Strong signal near trees

I was wondering why I always get a good strong signal about 1 foot away from the base of trees? I was hunting a local park and at the base of every tree I checked, I got a good signal. I dug a couple but didn't find anything. It's been very wet here. These trees are only about 4-6 inch diameter. People like sitting under trees while they watch ball games but every tree about the same distance from the trunk and nothing there. I stopped checking but I know there has to be stuff under trees beside a ball field. Any ideas?

A lot of times if they were bought from a nursery, and put in by Landscapers, they will have a wire basket/wrapping around the root ball

Yep that's what it is. I get that all the time around trees that are not old, and sometimes some of it is sticking up out of the soil. Makes for rough detecting around the trees.

My V/Sat can pick up moisture and minerals in roots some times.
How sensitive is your MD.

Trees tend to collect and concentrate minerals around their bases. This mineralization is probably what your seeing. Try rebalancing your machine at the base of the tree and see if the signal goes away. If it does just remember to re balance again when you go back out into the open areas.

I didn't want to dig a massive hole in a park chasing a false signal.

Sometimes if you bump the tree with your detector you will get a false signal. Trees don't produce many coins in my experience. I look at old trees more as a place a guy peed more than a pocket drop. On occasion I have a found a penny or so. My favorite spots lately have been athletic fields, especially along the sidelines.

I disagree. Hunting along trees has been fair to me. Generally not upto the trunk but out under the canopy where there is still some good grass or just good shade. I have had some luck in much older trees near sidewalks finding coins amongst the raised roots. They tend to catch stuff and keep it shallow. The biggest draw back to trees is its also always tended to be where the wine'o's hang out and toss their ever dammed collections of Boon's Farm, Mad Dog 20/20, pull tab, beaver tail, pop caps ect. ect ect...
