Yup, that's right :hello:

It would be like asking: "what's the best motor vehicle?". The answer would be: "what do you want to use it for ?" For example: do you want top end speed? Consider a corvette. Do you want to pull out tree trunks? Consider a low-geared truck. Do you want to haul rocks and gravel? Perhaps a dump truck. Got 4 kids to go to soccer practice daily? Consider a mini-van, etc.....

Do you want the best metal detector or a good metal detector? In my opinion you will get neither for $300. Try to borrow somebody's and see if you like the hobby if your new at it. If you like the hobby you will not want the cheapest one you can buy, it will only make you go mad.

The Tesoro Silver umax is a great starter for $255. I've had most of them but have kept the Silver along with the "best" detectors.I've found coins, jewelry and gold nuggets with mine.

Want one thats good in fields and beaches

Beaches? If you mean wet salt beaches you're going to be SOL on a $300 budget. However, if you stay in the dry sand and/or fresh water beaches you'll be fine with a $300 unit.
VERY hard (if not impossible) to beat the EuroTek Pro at that budget.

If you can find a CZ5 or CZ-6a they are supposed to run ok on salty wet sand and may fit your budget. Also there is a Sovereign Elite on Fleabay that will be good for beach and other detecting.
