how to conceal a metal detector

Hello everyone!! I just joined, because I'm a brand new novice at all this.

I already have a problem..
After I ordered my first metal detector, I learned that my country forbits its use!
I still would love to use it of course, but I might have to be not-so-obvious about it.
Does anyone have any ideas how to make it not-so-obvious?

with all Due respect I did an IP search to see what Country you are from.
I won't spread it around of Course. because of your Privacy Rights.
I'm pretty sure we have a couple members from your Area though.

Are you sure it is completely illegal ?
Not even allowed on your & your Friends & Relatives Properties & Woods ?

What I think I do know is that your Countries reactions to breaking laws are very Harsh,
so I would advise against even trying to conceal,
which would be pretty hard to do anyway with any decent real detector.

I hope you can figure out a legal solution Even if it means taking trips to use it

Sad to hear Tomkay, very hard to disguise a detector and even harder to not appear to be detecting. What Great country do you live in that has made it illegal to detect?

Welcome to Tnet! First off, obey the law, however goofy it may be. No point in going to jail for anything you may find. If you can hunt legally somewhere and you don't want to stand out, hunt at night. If it's lookie loos or people pestering you as you detect, hunt at night! Now, if that just isn't safe or somehow impossible, get a shirt or vest that says "Bomb Disposal Unit" on it. That won't help camouflage you, but, it should keep people back!

I agree with the others in asking what country ? And what makes you so sure it's illegal ? Don't confuse laws regarding Federal land with other types public and private land.

For example : dire sounding laws you may have read will not apply to farmers land with permission . Since , of course , thats private , not public land .

I usually use two separate detectors. I duct-tape a 6x10 concentric coil to the bottom of each shoe. I snake the coil wires up each pant leg. I put the head-units in a backpack, and wear a single earpiece for each.

I then run the the woods like a crazy man, stopping occasionally to do something which must look like ballroom dancing to the casual observer. I then mark the desirable target with fluorescent hard candy.

I come back later without any "encumbrance" and dig where there are spots of brightly colored ants.

Sounds like a very locked down country. If that' the case you probably have two choices: (1) Re-locate to a place that does allow it. (2) Find another hobby. In this hobby, we try to avoid brushes with the law, or bringing any negative attention to it. Good luck!!

A few weeks back, we had a shop picnic on a park that the Navy owns. It had been in use since the twenties so I of course brought my Deus. After making the rounds and grabbing some food, I started swinging. Only a short time later, the recreation specialist that ran the equipment rental booth approached me somewhat urgently. I figured that she thought I wasn't authorized to be there and wanted to see identification, which I began to provide. As it turned out, she saw a person with a metal detector on Navy land and automatically assumed that it was an EOD operation to remove UXO; her concern was for the other people using the park. We quickly got it sorted out and both went on our ways, but damn...

For the original poster: I don't condone illegal activity generally, but when I first saw a XP Deus in action, my initial thought was that it would be perfect for illegal activities. I've never used mine that way, but I still think that it would work well for that. If I were going to do this (why the hell am I even mentioning this?) I'd mount the coil underneath a baby carriage, assuming that the area in question was not too rough, and periodically nod my head or mouth words as if there was music coming through my headphones instead of beeps.

I'd figure that those things would be made out of plastic nowadays. The hardware might or might not be an issue with a motion-based detector, but they could be replaced with nylon fasteners if it was a concern.
