That's wild! Funny, too, because I tend to dig a lot of screw caps; they tend to hit strong even with discrimination high on my machine.

Maybe something along these lines.
It just doesn't look like sterling silver to me

Nice find and save ! I found one similar awhile back, and never determined for sure what it came from. As mentioned, a nice permanent pocket flask could have had a sterling screw cap, as well as Victorian tabletop condiment bottles, upscale perfume and toiletry bottles and vanity sets, and who knows what else?

You never know. I like to give my junk pile one more go over before departure. I opened a stepped on child's ring a few days ago for a second look, and to my surprise it had 14K stamped in it.

You're right about checking the finds. I found a piece that I thought might be part of a decorative tin ceiling tile, but on closer inspection I saw that old welcomed word " Sterling " on the back. Yesterday my hunting partner tossed me what I thought was a crumpled aluminum food can and said " Before you dismiss it as junk, turn it over". Sure enough, there it was ~ Sterling!

Great save.
Now I'm wondering; have I've ever tossed away any good silver??
I hope not.

Congrats on the silver and a good eye.
