wE have been detecting my nieces ranch of willows ca for several years. There were early homesteads on her ranch. We find lots of iron parts, stove parts, small wagon parts etc. question is why do we find so many axe heads, must have found at least 20. I will post our finds after we get back from thanksgiving metal detecting there.

I've found quite a few axe heads around old farms etc. Don't know for sure, but I'm thinking often the handles broke, head gets tossed or laid aside and over the years what wood was left rots away. I've found a bunch of them around old logging camps which is probably more expected than most other areas.

Always thought Axe heads were a cool find. Most seem to be a good working order.

You ever consider restoring one? It's pretty easy and they look nice finished up...electrolysis will knock the rust off of them real quickly.

My theory is that the user of said axe broke the handle and got p-o-ed, and threw it as hard as he could.

Some axes did break. I found this 200 year old blacksmith made ax head in a yard that was cleared for a house 200 years ago.
The blacksmith axes were two parts ( hammer forged together). Sometimes the tempering was not quite right and they split.
I conserved this one. Frank five star.png
