The Roneys Point Poorhouse was originally a mansion built in 1911 by Henry Schmulbach, a wealthy Ohio County businessman and owner of among other enterprises, Schmulbach Brewing Co. After Schmulbach's death in 1915 the mansion was sold to Ohio County which expanded it and opened it in 1918, as the Ohio County Poorhouse and County Farm. The property also contained a TB hospital, built in 1935, a nurses residence for those employed in the TB hospital, a juvenile detention center, a insane asylum, a groundskeepers residence, carriage house, dairy barn, grain silo and greenhouse. There was also a small hospital for the poor farm residents.
The state of West Virginia purchased the property in 1967, held onto it for several years, and then returned it to the county. This place has been empty since 1976 when the local fire departments used it for a training fire.

Nice finds. I used to work at Mattel toys, makers of Matchbox and Hot Wheels. Matchbox brand was bought by Mattel from Lesney in the 60's. When I left in 2000 the cars were not being made with as much quality as the Lesney cars. I noticed a big drop in consumer collectiblity for recent productions. So, your find is special-still works and original Lesney.

It's a shame they let a neat old place like that go to ruin.

I LIKE your sites to hunt! Those look very inviting.

Keep digging!

PS - that little pistol over the thimble used to come with a rubber bulb - it is a squirt gun.

Thanks guys!

Yes it is, sad to say there are many neat old places around here that have been left to rot. Kids have partied up at the old Mansion since the 70's and there was a movie filmed there a few years back. Here are some of the stories and a little more history. The Legends of Roney's Point Examined

Here is some info on the movie. Bird's-Eye Media set to shoot $2.5-3 million thriller "Roney's Point" next summer

I wondered about that, where the handle should be it's round and has a groove. :icon_thumleft:

It makes sense now, time to see if can find a picture of a complete one! :laughing7:

Love the finds. Ya gotta love the MXT as well. I'm surprised the hospital didn't give up more. Think it's been MDed to death?

No complaints at all, great machine. I wouldn't mind also having the V3i and a machine that's waterproof like the AT Pro.

The hospital may have been detected in the past but it was guarded for a long time and still is. There are years of beer party remnants from kids back in the 70's and 80's, people would go there at night to party. Some got run off lot's of them didn't but during the day is a different story. The State Trooper mentioned in the article I posted stopped on his way home to see what I was doing, he had an attitude at first, but once he saw I was just detecting he was polite.

He said it was ok for me to detect as long as I didn't enter any buildings, and gave me permission to return as long as I check in with him first, he lives just up the road in the old nurses residence.

Besides all the garbage a lot of prime areas are heavily grown over like the main entrance to the original mansion, I found that razor along a wall there. The drive in front of the hospital wing had grown over and when they filmed scenes for that movie the cleared a lot of that piling it right along the edge of the drive on the building side. I found the handcuff key close to where the pile ended.

I only detected for about two hours and overlooked a lot of areas including all the other buildings. I plan on going back and spending more time but I have lot's of other things to do and other places to detect that may be more productive. I know of an old farmhouse that is way back in the woods, there are a couple of jars of silver coins up there just waiting for me to dig them up... at least that's what I hope!!! :laughing7:
