If you are looking in local playgrounds or parks, you are looking in the same place as everybody else since 1980. You need to start trying to research places people gathered in the PAST (1870 - 1950). You need to start thinking outside the box, and be prepared to do a little work with your head, not just your machine. Good Luck!

Anywhere close to the river, downtown district is old enough for anything, get a small coil and learn to hunt in the trashiest places you know of, lots of goodies have been masked from the bigger coils for decades even in places they say are pounded to death.

Cant seem to find anything but pop tabs and zinc pennies. Any suggestions on where to look for a better find.

Been right where you are. Take the advice of moving locations. The best detector does no good if nothingis there. Try your grandparents home and another good thing to do is tell others your in the hobby. This can produce "hot spots" as well. Will be looking forward to you r finds.

If you are finding pennies, then there are still dimes and quarters there, even in your own yard. It took me 7 days to even find a penny in my own small yard. Within 2 months...I dug lots of dimes where I'd missed finding one within that week. If you are still at home to detect, dig it all.

You have to find the zinc and tabs to get the gold. So keep digging. I usually eliminate zinc / pull tabs on my detector and just go for the silver to make a small payday. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum,

To find gold you will dig your share of pull tabs, there is no way around it. We have all dug a HUGE amount over the years, but it does pay off!

Hey man, I've been in your shoes before. Finding somebody nearby in your town with the same interest and develop a good relationship is a good start - a metal detecting buddy! All of the places Soloman listed is perfect material! Look online for old aeriel photos.....www.historicaeriels.com for example - these photos show a look into yesteryear. I've located old home sites and schools by comparing old maps versus current maps. Google earth I use regularly. My best finds though are talking with older people. I've gained a friendship with a 90 year old man who has given me permission to hunt his property that has old homesites from turn of the century. Today it's nothing but a plowed cotton field, but back then someone's home. I've found numerous silver coins this way. My point is all the text books and internet won't necessarily tell you where X marks the spot, but just talking with older people about the past can give you great locations. I always shake hands with the land owner and usually they enjoy good conversation about the past.

the most overlooked places to hunt are the,"fluke"spots.any turnout on a highway, small patches of virgin ground etc.be creative.I have had some excellent finds in places that had no obvious reason to search.
