I remember awhile back reading a post about covered bridges being good places to hunt around. I decided to research them in my area. I have 27 covered bridges with pictures and dates that I now have saved and documented. Now if I just wasn't stuck in this house because of the weather. Can wait to hit them.

While you're housebound, you may want to check to see if they are historical sites and investigate the rules regarding them and where the boundaries of the site are located.

What methods did you use to find old covered bridges?

Search the internet of course! Just Google your state and covered bridges.

Was wondering if there was anything specific. Like for ghost towns I have several great sites or books to recommend. Beach hunting, etc so wasn't sure if you had some good specific resources. Lol I figured the Internet would be the main source though. Thanks.

A LOT OF TIMES - AT ONE TIME - MANY OF THESE BRIDGES WERE TOLL BRIDGES - SO PEOPLE FUMBLING FOR THE TOLL MONEY DROPPED SOME - OTHER BRIDGES IF OLD ENOUGH MAY HAVE BEEN THE SITES OF REV WAR OR CW ACTIVITY - MANY OF THEM - THE PLACE TO MAKE A KILLING IS IN THE WATER UNDER NEATH THEM

Jesse, there are a couple other things to think about pertaining to covered bridges.

1. Exactly what Casper wrote.
2. I remember reading years ago, that people use to use covered bridges as a sorta wishing well, tossing coins into the water as a sign of good luck.
2a. Also people at one time would leave a token or coin on one of the post or cross beams as a way to thank who ever it was that originally built the bridge, you have to remember at first the covered bridges weren't built by the government or state, some were constructed by private individuals as a means to get their crops/goods to the local towns/markets to sell.

If the water around the bridges isn't too deep I would def hit those areas along with the shore/entrance areas for dropped coins, as long as the area is allowed to be hunted. Some may be on private lands so permissions may need to be gotten.

Definitely sounds good. I want to try out some shallow water hunting also. Now I can combine the bridges with the water hunting. Can't wait.

also many church & school Picnics were held near covered bridges for a reason.

If all of a sudden there was a downpour everyone could run for cover.

they were also used for lovers meetings

and Halloween Pranks. Kids used to hide in the rafters & jump down at the
best time to scare their intended prey.

although I havn't read of any, it comes to mind,
Highway robbers may have also used that trick.

and don't forget a covered bridge is a easy thing to remember.
so if you needed to hide something or set up a meeting,
the covered bridge could be the perfect spot

Naturally they don't last forever so some have been washed away by floods,
some repaired & some just replaced, But where ever a bridge crosses a creek,
there is a chance a Covered bridge may have been there
or near at one time. check them all if you can.

Example, This one was destroyed in '72 by a Flood & bypassed

ds.jpg

this one was Destroyed in flood of '72

Rebuilt Burned by arson(s)

re rebuilt & turned into historic view

3er.jpg

on new caches, I would guess allot of covered bridges have Geo caches.
I know of one in my area.

People love to throw things off bridges. Around here you have the George Washington bridge. The drive to throw themselves off it is no less then a monthly event. Then we have the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Nicknamed (Guinea Gangplank) for obvious reasons.
Yep there something about them bridges.
Good luck.

Is there an advantage of old covered bridges vs. old open bridges?

I'd like to hear opinions on that too. So far it seems to be covered bridges my have been more occupied and diverse to people's needs, from what I've read here so far. So... more relics, coins, etc?

people fish from most bridges
and throw stuff off them.

But the Covered Bridges were older used by Horse , buggy.
people also stopped to take in the surroundings.

cars going 35 ignore them

& Covered Bridges were more widely used as JJ said.
