Awesome eyeballed relic

Went on a Boy Scout trip this weekend at Antietam battlefield. We camped some miles away from the battlefield itself. When we went to collect firewood I looked down in a small stream and saw a green rectangle, I picked it up figuring it was trash but to my surprise it was a old shoe buckle. Leave a comment about the time frame this style shoe buckle was used or anything you know about it, thanks.

The metal looks too thin to be a belt/shoe/saddle buckle. Maybe it was made for something decorative.....like a sash.

It probably looks thin from the picture but it's quite heavy and thick actually. I can also see that it had been curved like a shoe buckle is before it got smashed. About as thick as a silver dollar
