I did download a detecting app at one point, but haven't used it yet.

I use a Garmin eTrex to mark the odd way-point. I went with a "real" GPS for safety reasons, I didn't want to rely on cellular service for functionality.
(I realize most phones have some sort of "GPS", but there is concerns they will not function right without cell service or adequate data available.)

That being said, a cell phone is probably nicer to use, I will watch this thread to see what others are using.

I use Spyglass too zman. It's the only one I've found to be accurate and relatively simple to use to get to the spots in the woods I've found on old maps. If historicaerials would add a real time gps location to their old aerial mapping it would be sweet.

Thanks Rob. I also purchased an App called Lead Nav GPS for iPhone for $19.00. Instructions are Sketchy at best. SPYGLASS is 500 % better.

Try "Topo Maps" or "Gaia GPS". Both offer free Topo Quads for the whole US and the ability to download them so you can use them when you have no connectivity.

Check out Maprika. You can take an old topo and place points from google maps on it and it will geo code your old topo to be very accurate. You upload your map to their server and download it to your phone and can pull up the old topo and see exactly where you are in real time. It takes a bit of work but it works amazing and is free also.

Rob. If you know where to get the directions please let me know. I can't even figure out how to put a waypoint/marker in the map. Also the Topo maps don't work at all. Tried using it today.

There is a "user guide" on Maprika.com. Look at "make your own map on Windows PC" it looks confusing as hell but once you make one its a piece of cake. You have to log in to their server to make it work but it's free.

Not Maprika bashing, but I don't see where you can download any topo maps from them, although you can import all kinds of stuff through, the somewhat complicated offline processs.

Gaia has tons of topo maps including historic ones. You can also georeference and import any kind of image file.

nice program.

Tect O Track I use for in town on lots and parks. takes a little messing with but you can pinpoint every find and save info and a pix of find and it keeps track of your path so you can leave and come back. Without reworking same spot. Plus it uses what looks like google earth interface for real images
