The detector senses the relative conductivity of the whole chain vs. the surrounding soil.

and that is the conclusion that my very limited knowledge would have had me draw, as all of the links are touching/connected and would "seem" to have different conductivity than an individual link??

It would be cummulative. 100 individual & seperate links in close proximity would read the same as a chain made of those 100 links connected together.

But those 100 will give you a lot better signal that only one link.

You are right the detector sees each Link separate.

The best way I can describe it is the Cache I found last year.
the Detector saw each coin separate.
it did not bang on or overload, It saw a mess in the ground and sounded like rotted trash,
or Iron ore. it was only by digging that I eventually realized it was a cache.

The same thing happens with a chain, only with the links being really tiny,
most ears & the Minds Eyes see it as ground disturbance & ignore it.

Now add a Charm, you get a louder Bang that may get your attention.
and if your a curious detectorist, You'll dig
