I've found a few. all were found with a pin pointer with other coins in a spill. All were badly rusted and never took any photos of them.

I've dug one or two. I soaked the best one in white vinegar until all the rust came off. The coin had absolutely no detail remaining, and I threw it away. The other one was so far gone that I'm not even sure it was a coin in the first place.

I found them in change. I have about 4 to 5 dollars worth of them in rolls. But in the ground they rust away to dust.....

I once found a roll of wheat cents that had say 10-15 steel cents in it ..they were very rusted & crumbly..they dont hold up well when buried!

look in any coin star money machines- you see - being steel the machine will reject them --look in the reject slots --they will be a dull gray to silverfish looking coin

All the answers you've got so far are correct: You would never find them md'ing (or wouldn't recognize them if you did). For starters, you're probably rejecting iron, nails and so forth, right ? So kiss steel cents goodbye. And assume for the moment you did find one (because you were in all-metal, or using a pulse on the beach, etc...): You'd have an un-recognizable rusty slug that you'd just pitch out.

Like Mark, I've found at least 1 in the hole with a copper cent (fused and rusted stuck to the copper cent).

Perhaps if you found on under a house where moisture had never affected it ? But even then, even if in perfect shape, you'd be hard-pressed to get numismatically more than a few bucks for it. So why bother ? :)

Found these 2 the same day. One was with 3 other wheats and other was laying on a silver quarter.

I found my first one earlier this month. I'm sure you can tell from the picture which one it is (rusted up blob that rang up as a low tone with my probe) All came out of the same hole! :o

All the coins in the hole dated 1944 or earlier.

Cool. I've always wanted to find one. I was going to go over a yard I got a bunch of old coins out of and open up my pattern to iron signals hoping to find one. I'm so glad I didn't have to resort to that kind of frustrating hunt. LOL! :D

I have never found one. I would assume that discrimination takes them out of the equation... because they are steel.

I have one at home that came out of circulation and was given to me as a kid 20 or so years ago. Still in good shape last I remember. I will try and post a picture of it later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Or you can buy them in near mint condition on eBay for $1.

FYI...during WWII, many people simply threw steel pennies away and refused to collect them considering them worthless.
