Shield buckle?

I found this buckle on a 1756 home site. I've heard talk about shield buckles before, but this is my first, assuming that's what it is. Can anyone provide any info on these? When I first saw it, I thought it might have a military connection. The button and crusty Indian head were found on the same site.
