After getting some advice on the Toolshed area of the forum I got my first detector. I ended up with a used whites mx5 which came in the mail yesterday. Today I took it to an area where I found an old dime as a kid. I worked there for about an hour and then went to a spot where I know of an old farm foundation and worked there for about an hour as well. Today I was just trying to learn how it works and trying to figure out how different types of metal register. I adjusted the threshold and sensitivity and tried different tone settings. I felt like the vdi jumped all over the place so I know I have some learning to do. This is what my screen was doing. I tried to only dig numbers above 70 but the numbers were bouncing between negative and positive. Some of the bigger things showed up as OL which I assume means overload. What do you make of the readings I was getting?

Lots of stuff in the ground! Or sensitivity set a bit too high.

I got a little more info about the area. Turns out a trailer exploded on one side of the yard and a farm house burned down on the other and it sounds almost like the whole mess had been bulldozed so I guess I was basically on top of a junk yard... In that type of situation what do you do? Too many beeps to discriminate? If I had previously found a 1902 barber dime on the surface.

If you want to cherry pick for old coins, get a tiny coil and work it real slow. Otherwise, you'll need to start at one end and slowly dig all targets until you get to the other end. Personally, I'd cherry pick and move on to better hunting sites.
