If it's open on the left end, then I'd guess a vase from a gravesite maybe. Looks like the base is sitting there next to it.

I bet you there is a possibility of old grave markers where you are hunting... just a couple hundred feet down the road from my house is an old family grave site. It is overgrown and hidden in the trees... judging from how close you are, there is a very good possibility there are some dead bodies around don't dig further down than 6 feet!

There is one exactly like it on the marker next to my parents grave. The notches on the base are so it can be engaged into the gravestone in either the upright or recessed (upside-down vase inside marker) positions. A small knob is probably missing under that base which connected the base to the vase.

I am 100% sure that is from a grave site. my father has one, it locks into the ground, OR goes upside down into the ground. it cost extra to have those placed in the cement footer at the base of the grave where the headstone sits.

You are welcome. I spent 100s of hours at my dad's and grandparent's graves this summer and did a lot of walking around in the cemeteries. so, i recognized it right away. glad to help out. it's a nice one. keep it and place at your own or a relatives grave. those things are expensive!!!!! good luck!!!!

Some scumbags steal them, melt them, and sell the brass.

There is a special place in Hell for people like that, it's next to the fireplace!

My thought is to return it to the cemetery. Right?

Congrats on finding a Merc... I see that little rascal in there.

Best of luck to you sir!

Agree on returning it back to the cemetery.
There's only about 50 or so markers there shouldn't be hard to find the owner.
Thanks for the comment. Love Mercs!!!
