Looks like a piece broke off the top. At first I thought the top of a cheap antique door knocker but the more I look at it something that was a decorative piece on a hanging lamp maybe....

I know this item... just cannot remember what it is... :P

That is brass , looks like part of a trigger guard.
It has same attachment tab as trigger guard.

What gets me is, the piece has very sharp-detailed edges on the facing part, yet the rear part seems worn. And where a pin(?) goes through looks rough.

I simply do not have a clue!!
