just recieved my detector

I rushed to ths post office to pick up my detector, then rushed home and put it together ,turned it on and went to the back yard and scattered some coins.The thing starts beeping in a place where i didnt put any coins so i go get the shovel and start digging and my first find is ....... what do you know the cast iron cleanout to my sewer line any way i always wondered where that thing was at.I'll keep ya'll posted bye

chaos 1 - i would suggest that when you get your new detector that you go out immediatly and play with it until you know some of its idiocyncracys then when it gets too dark to detect - go home and do some research. just a suggestion . wayne

went back in the yard and found 3 pennies some bottle caps athe front end of a matchbox car and water nozzle for the garden hose .I knew some of it was trash but still cant tell the difference

low as possible and slow as possible... make sure you have a coil cover....

I believe you said you got a Whites Classic II right? If so, may I give you some pointers? The sound is most important, hard to explain, but here goes. I swing my detector just off the ground like I was mowing the grass with a weed eater. Do not raise coil off ground at end of swing, keep coil flat to ground during entire swing back and forth. THe classic II is a motion detector, the coil has to be in motion for it to detect a target. When you squeeze the toggle switch that puts it in all metal mode for pinpointing and in non-motion mode so you can x out the target with side to side and back and forth motion to pinpoint.
Now to the sound part. A smooth beeep one direction of the swing, and a smooth beep in opposite direction of swing, indicates a good target, a broken bee-eep, beep in both directions indicate a junk target, usually a pull-tab or old rusty bottle cap. If you have discrimination knob set on coins preset mark, ans sensitivety set at preset mark, it should filter out all but a large metal target such as popcan, sewer pipe lid, or some such piece of metal too large for filter to cancel, but these are easy to determine as the signal covers a larger area than a coin does. Look for small targets, listen to the sound, smooth beep, good, broken be-ep, bad. HH. Scotty

thanks scotty . I went to the park for more practice and still found junk & some pennies but i also found a sterling silver ring like james avery sells .It was about 6 inches deep.Any way no coins bigger than pennies yet ,i dont know if im doing somethig wrong or if they just aren't there .thanks again for the info.PONCHO

Good deal on finding a ring. You will notice as you progress and hunt more that people lose a lot and I mean a lot of pennies. Pennies are harder to see and most people are too lazy to bend down to pick up a penny. I don't think you are doing anything wrong, if your detector is picking the pennies, it will get the dimes and quarters too. Nickles is a different matter, they are in pull tab range, but can be found, if you take a pull tab and a nickle and put on the ground and separate them by a couple feet and run coil over it, turn discr. knob down to coin/ring mark then turn clockwise until it quits beeping on tab, but still beeps on nickle, then make a mark on your detector at that point so you can return it there anytime. That should help you get nickles and gold rings better.

I did the front yard tonight 1 quarter 3 dimes 4 pennies,i gotta say 6 inches is a long way to dig for a penny.I am thinking i dont want to dig much more than 6 in for anything except a bucket of gold,anyway the $100. used classic 2seems to work pretty darn good so far.i'm out PONCHO

Hey Poncho, great to hear that you've not only got the bug, you've the tools also! Once you find that excellent IH you'll think 6" is nothing to dig for a cent.
There are some great online sites for decent recovery tools also. Check around, the tools you use to dig with are very important to maintaining your level of enthusiasm. Depending on the ground and brush in your area, a good tool for root sawing can be indispensible.
