Kelly, what you describe doesn't make much sense, as you should get more depth on the all metal mode. I am speaking for Fisher and White's machines that I have tested. I don't know about B.Hunters.
Air tests never show a machine's full depth potential, as ground conditions effect the depth capabilities. Non-ferous metals that have been in the ground for a while, create what is known as a "halo" effect and can be found at greater depths than on an air test. Moisture in the ground also gives better depth. However, ground mineralization decreases depth.
Depending on what machine, the general rule for depth in fairly stable ground is: Maxium sensitivity, little, if no discrimination, slight threshold buzz, proper ground balance, options like head phones, larger coil, audio boost. When using lots of sensitivity, if you start to experience false signals or lots of chatter, then decrease until comfortable.
Sensitivity is to me, the most important for achieving greater depth.
Hope this helps.
Dave.

Dave, Thanks for the info. This was a air test. Couldnt get much depth when I buried the nugget in a zip lock bag in all metal mode. So thats when I tried the air test.Ill go bury it again at different levels and try your idea. kelly

Kelly; The Man has it right ive been using bounty hunters for thirty years now and would like to add inspect your search coil especially the cable were it enters the coil this will allow a little moisture to enter the coil decreasing performance till a factory fix becomes clear.I dry mine with a hair dryer and seal were the cable enters with good silicone. Just said this to keep in mind can save frustration in the future. otherwise astute ground balancing is the key and just a faint buzz in the tuning threshold as faint as you can achieve will yeild great results but ground balance gets the depth. have fun
