I called up my coin guy Mr Ray who is been in the coin business in my town for over 30 years. I told him that I found a 1875 seated dime and I think it's counterfeit. He told me it was probably real since they were so mass produce that year, but to come on by anyway. To his surprise it is a counterfeit and he said he's only seen 3 of those in the last 30 years. He was smiling like a schoolboy on Christmas it is a counterfeit and made of aluminum. He said he would've bet the farm that it was real and to look at it this way the odds of finding a counterfeit 1875 seated dime is crazy. Much easier to find the original. I should be proud. And that's the way I'm going to look at it lol l upload1494866124.279895.jpg . upload1494866413.784418.jpg

I don't know what to say to that...

I guess that Congrats are in order sir.

Did it not feel too light, and NOT make that ringing sound when it hit the granite countertop?

You know I weighed and it wasn't that much different but I thought that was because of the little chunk that was taken out, but when he threw it on his glass countertop I could hear the difference

He said I would get just as much for this then I would irregular one in the same condition maybe even a little more because people like to collect counterfeit coins.

I must admit it's a little bittersweet though

I have yet to find a seated coin, so it is still a sweet find in my book.

I also like that it was built to deceive... someone used that coin to cheat another person. It was designed and built specifically with crooked intent. NICE.

IDK..wasn't aluminum not widely available(in general use) until the early to mid 1900's?

Yeah I would say it's some kinda silver coated pot metal by the way that chunk out of it looks. Very cool coin[emoji106] for a fake. I like it!

You were right

Counterfeit coin expert: "Period counterfeits were not made from Al. This one looks like a cast example using antimony. Antimony is quite brittle and these piece easily cracked."
