While metal detecting on property that my grandparents bought in 1949, I found 3 black great seal buttons. 2 small ones, and 1 larger one. Now finding buttons isn't a big deal except that they were scattered over almost 2000 feet. The property was surveyed and land granted in 1785 and was established in the early 1800s. My grandmother and her parents rented the property during the depression sometime.

Most of my research about the black great seal buttons shows they were made from 1902.

I found the first one about 100 feet from the road in a field. The second was found 1000 feet closer to the house about 40 feet from the road. Those were the 2 smaller ones. I suspect that they were jacket buttons.

Yesterday, I found the third and larger button 900 feet closer to the house. It was about 20 feet from the road. My niece found a small oval US insignia that was gold in color. It was found near button number 2.

The 1st button had a NY Buttonworks back mark and the 3rd one has The Austin Co back mark.

As with all the items I dig up, I try to visualize how it got there and what was happening at the time. Was it a soldier returning home from somewhere and scattering uniform parts? Was it someone that had returned home, got drunk and ditched all his uniform buttons in a meandering drunken path? Perhaps it's nobody related to my grandparents property at all and it was just someone that was passing through.

This one just fascinates me to no end!!!

I'm the same way with a lot of my finds. Always wonder why and how. Sometimes I figure it out and a lot of time I don't. That's a big part of the fun for me. The more you find, the more you will learn.
Let us know if you figure it out.
