My fourth silver find

I dug this dime yesterday. Third one ever. At the time I didn't know what it was, but it looked like a keeper. I put it in my pants pocket instead of my pouch. It must have cleaned up a bit detecting around the rest of the day. At home I could see the Mercury wing and after getting the light just right with my loupe, I discovered it was 1945. It definitely needs cleaning and am looking for suggestions.

I soak common date silver coins in vinegar on an inverted aluminum can for several hours or overnight, then rub them with some baking soda. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Unfortunately, no mercury dimes yet for me. I have come as close as you can get with a 1946 but no mercs yet!

I use the baking soda, aluminum foil, & boiling water method.

Take a small Pyrex casserole dish. Line it with one sheet of foil, shiny side up. Make sure there are no wrinkles where you are going to sit the coin.

Place the coin in the dish

Put 3 tablespoons of baking soda in the dish

bring a 2 to 3 cups of water to a boil and pour it in.

Let it sit for a few minutes.

Your coin should come out looking new.

I tried your method Loco-Digger. Chunks of material were blasted off the coin. One was like 1/4 X 3/8 inch and a bunch of other pieces. The material looked like paint, glue, or epoxy. It wasn't plain dirt. I will do it again in the morning. Thanks for your reply.

Most silvers that I have dug in Ohio have come out as shiny as they day they were dropped, however I have pulled 2 dimes that had a grayish tacky film on them.

Silver coins found in ground, under pine trees often have that black crud on them ...observation after many years .

The coin cleaned up well considering it's original condition as Loco-Digger thought it would. I had to use some of the method suggested buy cudamark. Thanks guys.

Congrats on your merc .My fav coin to find . I have been lucky enough to find over 20 of them in two years . A 1942 merc was my first silver .

I love the '42 merc and the '42 wheat. Same age as me and probably looking better.
