I have a question

In the county I live in there are 2 abandoned houses they are some of the oldest in the county early 1900s maybe late 1800. I have tried to find away to get permission there are no numbers to call or other houses around. How would I go about getting permission, or do I just go and detect without permission?

1. There are many ways to find out "who / what" owns the property... first being tax records.

2. NO. Do NOT "just detect it "anyway". This is IMO the number one problem with detectorists today... it has harmed the rest of us who play by the rules.

Amen to that! "I didn't think anyone would mind" is totally implausible. You might as well pee on your neighbor's lawn and say "I didn't think anyone would mind". Like AARC said, that is the way to get us shut down real fast.

Try contacting your local tax collector to see who is being sent a tax bill for the property. Vision Appraisal has a lot of cities / towns in their on-line database which gives property lines,owners, etc. Good luck once you get permission.

All the counties around me have a County Auditor site which will have a link to a GIS map app. you can find out were the tax bill is sent to, thus knowing where to go ask to get permission.

I do play by the rules I've never been on somebody's property without permission.but didn't know if same rule applies when there's no body to ask

Do you just see these houses from the road ? Or have you been able to get up for a walk around, to look at them closer ?

There was a post here once, from someone who did a full 360* around an abandoned house. Took pix of various things. I guess neighborhood/forest trails went right by it. And I had to stop and think : "Wait, your worried of whether you can metal detect, when .... technically .... even to stand there is no less "trespassing".

Perhaps yours are only visible from the road though ?

I passed by them on the street I stood in front of the houses never went on the property. I was hoping there would have been a sign with a number no such luck thats why I'm asking on here for advice on how to ask

I don't trespass either. I can't afford the hassle. I have only been denied permission twice in my life.

In my county and state there’s a website you can get on for the county assessor and it will say the name and address of the owner of the property. That’s how I’ve gotten most of my answers. Rarely do I have to go to the court house to figure it out

Thanks so much for the info,,I will definitely check out your channel,,I really would love to detect these houses but want to do the right thing I'm almost positive they haven't ever been detected

Sometimes the property is also known to the local real estate company. They are always looking for properties to buy and sell. They may be able to give you some information about the property but don't mention metal detecting.
If they ask why, just say that you're a hunter and wanted to cross the property.

Ownership and tax records are public information. Go to the courthouse, assessors office, give them an address (sometimes they have it on computers you can use) and you can find out who owns it and where they mail the tax bill to. Like someone mentioned, some places have them on line. It's the GIS mapping system. If you don't know the address, find the closest address you know, and pull the map, and follow it to your place of interest, and you will get the info you want. (and yes, you are allowed into those back rooms where all the books are)
