I’m sure this neighborhood park is a virgin park. I’ve been trying to figure out a safe way to get in there. It’s surrounded by homes from the 1900-1940’s. I decided to try this route and if approached I’ll tell them I work for the city and I’m doing tests to put in a FREE pool for the summer. IMG_2195.JPG IMG_2196.JPG

The vest looks official and will probably get more attention from park employees than from the trouble maker's. Good luck and bring home the silver.

It was about a year ago I was KO'd at a park in a questionable neighborhood. Never saw it coming, or heard it either because I had head phones on.

ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings.

Agreed.

Always have your head on a swivel... Its a pain in the arse... and takes some away from the "zen" that can come from detecting...

but like Jim Morrison of The Doors said...

"People Are Strange".

Which is one reason I always carry and leave one ear off on my headphones. Been walked up on too many times by everything except humans.

I would look at the access to the park and possibly zipping into several locations to do quick hunts to get a feel for the finds in the park and if it might be fairly safe or not. Also, not staying put for too long might keep you off some people's radar and let you get a better plan of attack. I wear the Rattler Headphones for the safety aspect of hearing around me. The idea of being spun and attacked or as deepseekerADS said KO'ed, not appealing. Can you get overhead views and layouts of the park and see if there is areas that might be more prime hunting to try first? If so, go for those, if you can add a buddy or two, do so and hunt in a group. Good Luck and keep us posted!

Go crack of dawn early and don’t go alone, try to team up with someone who can help you, don’t rely too much on mace, I don’t know too much about your area but here you whip out a can of mace and you will be shot! Good luck!

Sounds like a plan. I've got an old softball field that's in a bad part of town. Another idea is the old saying," There's security in numbers". Good luck.

Truth, I know exactly where you are coming from. I have made several posts regarding this matter. If it is a questionable part of town, I would recommend going with a small group if possible. The more eyes and ears, the better. One has to be like an owl these days doing a 360 at about all times unfortunately. There is a part of town that I used to hunt in the early 80's and we did pretty well, however this side of town has grown to be infested with violence and crime. Like Deepseeker ADS posted, a gentleman was hunting here solo about 3 years ago wearing headphones and bent down digging a signal with his back turned when he was rendered unconscious by some Thug's. Luckily, he wasn't killed, but when he awoke he found everything gone including his vehicle that was parked nearby. (So sorry this happened to you Deepseeker). I would love to one day go back to this area, but would be wise to go in with SWAT and heavily packing. It is a shame that times have gotten to be where they are now, but such are the times in which we are now living. I can't see things improving anytime soon until our Lawmakers if you'll excuse me here, (grow a set) and start punishing these Thug's and hoodlums instead of slapping them on their wrist and setting them free to commit crimes on society once again. In short, BE SAFE. Go in pairs and watch one another's back.

Can of mace doesn’t always work. I’ve emptied an entire can on someone and they just laughed at me. Also crack of dawn around here is when all the riff raff occurs because they hide in the shadows away from cops and that’s very hard to do during the daylight. It’s a hit and miss type of situation. You could go in the early morning hours and get mugged or it could be broad daylight. So sorry to say there’s really no good time. As metal detectorists we try to stay away from crowds but in bad parts of town you want to have numbers. Typically most suspects won’t steal from you when there is a group of people around you but in the rare case their on drugs it don’t matter if sheriff Joe is standing there either

I may not do KARATE by I can so do crazy. Being sneaked upon is the challenge. If you have a dog that might be a consideration on this outing...then bear spray the $#|7 out of him/them
