I went out to a park that I had never hunted and hunted a soccer field that doubles as a parking area for the county fair. After digging whole beer cans, big chunks of scrap, $1.07 in clad, I finally popped out a sterling and amber ring. The ring looked like it had been hit by a mower or ?. The back was bent in almost all the way to the front. It took about 30 minutes of playing after I got home to get it back round again by tapping on it with a little piece of wood while it was on the mandrel. The picture is before I got the scratches out and polished it. It is on the wife's finger now.

Steve, I found a ring that had been crushed like you describe. I have the small hard rubber mallet and an aluminum ring mandrel. I haven't tried to tap it back out because I think it might scratch up the the mandrel. Or is that just the price you pay to get the ring re-sharpened?

I used an aluminum ring mandrel and a wooden knife handle. First I opened it up with pliers. That was where I was most worried about breaking it. After it was open enough to fit on the mandrel, I put it on the mandrel and held the silver side of the ring over the cookstove flame while being careful not to get the amber too hot. Then I tapped the bent parts of the ring with a wooden knife handle. After I got the major bend out, I didn't bother with heat. I took it off the mandrel and looked to see where it needed more work, then back on and tap some more. When it got where I was happy, I took 320 grit wet sandpaper and worked out the bigger scratches and kept using finer paper until I got to 600 grit. Then out came the polish. There are some very fine scratches on the mandrel but nothing major.

Steve & I went out to the same spot today, we just came away with clad, and some serious trash.

I got to see that ring today, that picture posted doesn't do the ring any kind of justice - I could see no signs of previous damage. Great find, it's a good year starting off..
