A few days ago I found this 1897 V nickel at a local construction site. Badly worn. Muddy from recent rains so it wasn't until I cleaned it that I could read the date clearly. Thought it was a '95 but proved to be a '97. Second V. I found one in WI several years ago while hunting with TimC, Alpha105, and JimB. Found this one with my Tesoro Cortez. The Cortez is MUCH TOO sensitive, Terry S! Had a Devil of a time digging TINY specks of trash. Perseverance paid off. Gotta dig 'da trash to get 'da treasure! They were pouring concrete today so the place will be no good to us soon.

Wow. Our V's in Pennsylvania always come out brown, just like our Buffalo's too. Must be the AZ dirt that keep yours fresh. Way to go on the V.

Nice find. Wish the 1899 that I found looked as good as that one. Congrats

Hey Jesse! I don't know about AZ dirt. V I found in WI was virtually the same color. This one is much more worn, though. I'll have to dig up the old post if they keep them back to the previous site owners to compare. I've also dug Zincolns so badly corroded (though not necessarily green) that it was difficult to make out Lincoln's profile. I've dug silver as black as coal and some almost snow-white. I think the bad ones became bad because kids had them in their pockets when they pee their pants.... but not too sure about that point. ╦╦Ç

Great job I’ve found over 30 V nickels in 4 years and none of them came out the ground like that. The Louisiana dirt has them all reddish brown. Beautiful dug V in my book.

I’ve lost a spot to concrete and when I saw it being covered it was bitter sweet because 2 day prior I found my only half reale 1801, my only Shield nickel 1867 with rays and my only silver thimble to date a 3 bucket lister lot. I sat in the truck thinking thank the Lord I saved what I could. Still sad.

I'm getting near 100 and in better shape than the coin but I'm sure I would look worse if buried! ╦╦Ç
