    Buying a used detector

When purchasing a used detector, what do you, look for? I can think of looking for physical damage but what else? How would you check the electronics and so forth? I don't think I have ever bought anything used so I am a little inexperienced.

If you know someone that metal detects, get them to go with you to check it out. If not, I would look at new instead of used.

Yea I figured new would be the way to go. Just trying to save money on something I might get into so much.

    Metal Detecting
I've purchased five used machines from TNet members in the For Sale forum. They ALL were in absolute MINT physical condition and worked flawlessly. Check there! I've also had similar luck on eBay...but I asked lotsa questions and asked for extra, close-up pix.

I agree that if you can find a used machine from a trusted T-Net member or Sponsor, that would be the way to go. When testing a machine at a garage sale, make sure the machine ground balances properly, then do some coin and discrimination tests. These simple tests will tell you if the machine is working properly.

Cracked coil or damage where the wire joins the coil. Leaking batteries (left too long inside the machine).
