Cracks from hitting rocks can be a problem, but primary reason is if not used the bottom outer edges will start delaminating, sides seperating from bottom which allows water inside coil. If it is under warranty and they see mo cover was used it voids your warranty.

I looked into all the DIY cover options and it just makes more sense to buy one. I always try to talk myself out of buying a coil cover and then end up getting one anyway. If you ever decide to sell the detector you'll be glad you were using a cover.

Use the scuff cover, get top dollar for your machine or coil when you upgrade. :skullflag:

The simple answer is cost... Cost of a coil cover vs cost of a new coil. I'll pay for the coil cover every time, and in turn, sooner or later, it'll pay me back by saving my coil.

I look at it this way, coils are expensive, I am rough on stuff, coil covers are cheap so I would rather be safe than sorry.

This question gets brought up alot...and answered the same.

Its about the same as a brand new phone with no case for it.

YES, you would want to protect your coil, people think the terrain is always going to be the same, but there are many areas where rocks are all over the place and it takes one little tap to crack that coil.

Covers do not cost much

Hell, I wish they had an OTTER BOX for my CTX lol...I still catch myself "tapping" it against things

I have them on all my coils - mostly to protect from rock strikes (epoxy resin the coil sets in is brittle). And any scuffs are on the replaceable/refinishable cover.

But I do remove and clean them frequently.

Just think of it as cheap maintenance for your metal detector...:laughing7: :laughing7: Kind of like changing your oil & filter on you car/truck...you don't do it...and it bites you on the BUTT down the road at some point...:BangHead:

I always have a coil cover with me but do not always use one...

On sugar sand beaches... no... which is where I primarily hunt... and even sometimes yes there as well.

anywhere heavy shell or rocks... yes... anywhere else... yes.

Oh... inside a 7-eleven or wal-mart... no. :P

OK I'll play devils advocate. Coils covers are overrated. The can be difficult to place and remove, they can hold debris between the coil and cover, they can add unnecessary weight to your detector, ect. I have used several detectors over time and have used coil covers and have gone as manufactured. I have never broken a coil or worn through the original covering. Having said that, I have seen some guys abuse their equipment, crack their coils, grind through coverings by unnecessary rubbing on rocks, ect. Some people reduce their cars to junk in two years, some people wear out their shoes in six months. Don't rush out to buy a coil cover if you are a new user. Look at your coil after a few months of use. If it looks like a dog chewed on it then get a coil cover. If it looks good save yourself the trouble and some money.

I have a cover on every coil I own, cheap protection in my opinion.
