Found Flat buttons summer 2017 "questions"

Found this set of small flat buttons and I'm looking for some feedback on some questions I have about them.

One button has material still attached to it. Any guesses to what that material is and what kind of garment it was?

There is no apparent gap between the material and the button. The other buttons were found within inches of one another. Were these buttons used only for ornamental use?

I think the material is felt and possibly came off a hat like this one.

Huh, pretty cool, I’ve never seen a button that old come out of the ground with anything but dirt and roots on it. Very cool
