Pretty bad shape, but it's the oldest I've found so far. I could barely make out the date of 1886 on it. Detecting an old housing spot in my town that was long ago demolished. Found it next to what I think is either a root cellar or cistern (still not sure what they are - Stone lined holes, 3x3 up to 6x4 in ft, and between 2 to 6ft deep, no stairs at all). Even if it's not worth anything, it's my oldest now. Picked it up on my Fisher F44, but don't remember what it rang in at now. Was on Jewelry mode, sensitivity around 15 with iron disc'ed out. All the rest was trash. Soooooo many rusty nails there.

That's one of the "pits" around where the houses used to be. Anyone know for sure what they are? Too shallow to be a well, and that wouldn't make sense since they're pretty far up on a hill. That's the 4ft x 6ft by maybe 5-6ft deep one. This area's in the NW section of New Jersey, Warren County.

Congrats. Still waiting to hit the 1800s myself. I have gotten as close at 1914.

Congratulations on getting into the 1800’s. I can’t make out what coin it is. An LC?

Awesome find! Indian Head pennies always read funny for me, so saying it was in jewelry mode makes total sense.

I guess that makes me feel a little bit better about not making it into the 1800's yet...:laughing7: Oldest coin to date is a 1918 S penny...:BangHead: Got a couple of permissions I'm working on that just might get me into the 1800's tho...:headbang:

Great find! I just found my first 1800's last week in my backyard. I live on an old farm site. I found an 1899 Indian penny!

congrats on the IHP. I just recently found what I think and hope is my first 1800s coin, also IHP. Mine is in identical shape as yours, although I can't make out the date.:BangHead:......Don't know about the ground pits. Could they have been used for salt curing meats?...just a wild guess.

Congrats on the IHP!! I agree, the pits could have been root cellars, meat smokers, made even an outhouse?
