A relatively small step. It has a better coil and hits better on small gold. I'd save my money until I could get an Equinox. That would be a big step....maybe two!

Like Cuda said it is a small step up, you get a DD coil and couple more search features. If your a military vet you can get a vet discount of 15% off Minelab detectors, one detector a year. Highly recommend the Equinox just like Cuda.

From there might as well go to the AT Pro. It's not quite the price jump as the Equinox.

There is only about $100.00 difference between the AT Pro and The Equinox 600 and there is a huge difference in performance, especially hunting salt beaches.

I use the Ace 400 an love it. Im not sure of the other brands but i my self have just started detecting. I have found lots of stuff with my an seems it like to find money the most. Have found objects down as far as 8 inches.

Like i said im just starting out an it seems to work great. Im sure i will upgrdae to somthing else once i get a better feel an under standing on detecting.

The difference between the two is preset modes ie. relics coins and etc. I have the 300ace and love it, the 400 has iron audio the 300 dose not.

Garret has the best customer I have ever seen in 40yrs. I stripped a cam lock under warranty. They shipped it out I had it in two days.

Customer service like that is amazing. :notworthy:

Can't go wrong with the ACE detector series, an Id like the 400 very much. As noted above, some improvements from Ace 300 to Ace 400, but if you're looking for an upgrade, consider the AT Pro (My middle sister had a choice between Ace 400 at about $350 and AT Pro at about $550. and she chose the AT Pro). I believe it would also be considered an upgrade from the AT Pro to the Equinox 600 (about $700). And some improvement, but not an upgrade from the 600 to the 800. I just took delivery of the 800. Of course, if money is not a concern we all would probably purchase the most expensive machines, but when money is tight, as for most of us, we have to look at practical choices. Personally, I think the Ace 300 is a solid machine and if you're looking for a true upgrade, save your finds and seriously consider the AT Pro for a true upgrade. B]

You could try upgrading just the coil, 8.5x11 DD, will allow for much better separation.

The Ace 400 is a nice little detector for the money. I bought mine as a backup and use it often. I've found good stuff with it and it gets decent depth. Currently Garrett has a promotion where you get a Garrett carrot with it for only about $40 more, and if you talk directly to a sponsor on the phone you'll save even more. I think the Ace 400 will serve the purpose of finding coins and jewelry very well. Batteries last a long time also.

I have the Ace 400 as well...not too bad for a mid price range detector... Guess it depends on your budget and how much you want to put into your new machine...might consider the Equinox 600/800 as a viable choice if looking for a machine you can ground balance...etc...etc. Cannot ground balance with the Ace 400...:BangHead:

The machine you get should be suited for the types of places you plan on detecting at. If you're going to hunt schools and ballfields you don't need an expensive detector, the Ace 400 will do just fine. Your original question was "is the 400 a step up from the 200? and the answer is YES ! In MY opinion the 200 is for kids.
