As I live a block or two away from a local park, I found their website and asked about their policy on Metal Detecting.

Their response:

In response to the questions about metal detecting:

Metal detecting in of itself will not be a problem. However, digging into the ground to unearth an object is not allowed per the Park District Ordinances.

PARK DISTRICT ORDINANCES - SECTION 3.20 DESTRUCTION OF LANDSCAPE

“…No person shall pick, gather, uproot, remove or destroy any flower, plant or grass. No person shall remove or cause to be removed any sod, earth, humus, peat, boulders, gravel or sand.”

If you have any more questions you are more than welcome to contact me directly if that is helpful.

It sounds like I can go metal detecting but I just can't dig anything up.

Any way around this, anyone can think of?

Thanks,

Tim

Yes But be Prepared With Dirty Coins to prove it.

A few Clean Dangerous Items & Trash Bits on Ya can't hurt either.
Sharp pieces of Glass, Metal, Crumpled up Candy Wrappers. Crushed Can,
a Needle if you can acquire One. & Make it look Stepped on. Maybe a Live Bullet.
Things that look like your a "Value" to the Park, Not a Problem :coffee2:
I was given permission to hunt the bottom of a natural springs in Florida. I suppose I attracted some attention when in my wetsuit, I walked over to a trash barrel and deliberately made a show of emptying my finds bag of a double handful of pull tabs and junk. I didn't think it would hurt. I dove that springs a half dozen times after that and was always welcome.

Just remember Public & for Public Recreation can be 2 Different Things.

I would not Suggest you Go on the Courthouse Lawn, Or Public Square
without checking with Someone first. Preferably in Person.

But if the place has been Built for Public "Recreation", not to look nice
or for offical Business

This is a Veteran's Park near me.
It's listed as Public. But all you are allowed to do here is Walk in , Marvel over it,
& Leave. I'm pretty Sure they have arrested Teens for sitting on the Park bench :unhappysmiley:

Also Remember. If approached work it into the Conversation,,
It is a Hobby that Gives you Plenty of Exercise.
So they know your in the Park for "Recreational" purposes.
