Walmart has plastic tent stakes, the tops are big enough to write whats there. Less than a buck each.

Use different colored plastic landscape flags and write down what each color stands for.

White plastic spoon with a sharpie ID on the back. Stick the handles in at an angle so the back of the spoon is visible. Low enough so the mower does not hit.

Hunt in a local park until you get used to the sounds of different targets. No matter what detector you use even if it can detect targets at 12" it will sometimes send you a mixed signal at 8".

I take a small (1-1 1/2 in) round white river rock, mark it with black magic marker and spray it with varnish and just press it in flush with the dirt. Mower misses it, and and can see it easily. varnish keeps magic marker from fading or washing off.

I had an assortment of brightly colored plastic gold tees from my Father-in-Law. They came in a half-dozen colors.
