You may with to rake a small area of the junk and detect. Also, you may need to purchase a machine that has a super recovery speed with a small search coil. Lastly, you could dig a small area and sieve the soil for goodies!

I can see why your hopes would be high. Kids drinking and other nefarious things means change drops. homeless camping there can mean other things. either way be careful because it will have a lot of trash. take trash bags and clean it up while out....

If it was from the late 1800's, I would dig everything until I was absolutely convinced it was all modern trash. Some spots that I hunt here have an over-layer of more modern junk, with good stuff hiding underneath it. Patience and perseverance will need to be "On Tap".

Maybe focus on deeper targets,that give off a repeatable tone, and use your discrimination up past the middle of your machines layout. That may help you find some really good targets.
