Not a lot of experience with the Simplex but the other day was hunting with a friend, I had my Equinox 800 and he had a Simplex, and after I dug my forth button and he was having no luck, I had a decent signal and called him over. He went over it and got no signal at all. I dug it up and it was a small tombac button about 6" deep. I think it just goes deeper, you pay the price but there is a real difference.

wait and scrape up some more $ go for the 800. Nothing better for coin hunting than using bins with volume, pitch adjustments to make the coins stand out. you are in for a quiet hunt. Plus last week found a wheat buried in the same small hole with a 4" rusty nail and 1.5 x 1.5" piece of rusted iron. the 19-20 signal came through pretty good despite the iron.

When using the 800 it just gets better over the more time you use this remarkable machine.
